Seed Lending Library

Initiated in the spring of 2013 with funds raised by Lillooet Food Matters, the portable Seed Lending Library was designed to encourage and support the creation of a sustainable local food system through cooperation among gardeners and seed savers. The library contains seeds for the community to share and grow.  Like a regularly library, the seeds borrowed must be returned.  The library is set up for people to  check out seeds they are interested in growing, with the request that they reutrn a portion of the saved seed to the library for others to use.  The seeds in the library are free for the taking as they have been donated by a number of seed companies and individuals.  The seeds are organized into Super Easy, Easy and Advanced categories and come with easy to follow seed saving guidelines.

The library made its first appearance at the Lillooet Farmer's Market in May of 2013 and was recieved with much interest.  It was gratifying to see seeds being taken home for growing out.  This year its first outing will be at Lillooet's 6th Seedy Saturday on March 1st, 2014.  On March 15th and 19th, 2014 it will be at the Lillooet Public Library from noon to 2pm.  It will also be returning to the Lillooet Farmer's Market in May.  Stay tuned for further appearances as this year's growing season begins.  We would love to hear any requests or suggestions about where the library might be welcome.

Thanks to funding available from the Lillooet Community Foundation, in 2013 Lillooet Food Matters purchased a community-sized seed winnower for cleaning seeds.  It will be available at Seedy Saturday and the Farmer's Market for use by people.
